Honda Exhaust Systems: What You Need to Know

What They Do

They help remove the noxious byproducts the engine in your Honda creates when it burns fuel, releasing mostly harmless carbon dioxide and water vapor afterward. If your vehicle didn't have one, poisonous fumes would sicken you and your passengers, run afoul of emissions standards and laws, and pollute the environment.

How They Work

Sort of like an air filter. Toxins go through a catalytic converter made of metals like platinum, rhodium, and palladium, where they get trapped and split into oxygen, which flows onward, and nitrogen, which stays behind. Hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide get burned up; meanwhile, a resonator and muffler work together to optimize airflow. An exhaust manifold then sends the cleaner gases down an exhaust pipe to the muffler's tail pipe, which releases them; they then dissipate.

The Signs of a Bad One

They're easy to spot before exhaust failure. Look for:

  • Warning lights on the dashboard, such as Check Engine
  • Worsening fuel efficiency
  • A rotten-egg smell
  • Unusual muffler and exhaust pipe noises

How You Tell When to Change it

That depends on what exhaust parts are the problem. To figure out the answer, run an exhaust inspection. Change whatever the results call for replacing. Otherwise, be sure you're changing your catalytic converter at 100,000-mile intervals and your muffler and/or resonator at 2-to-4-year intervals. You can buy it all right here online.
