There are two -- drum and disc. When the brake pedal is pressed, one or more brake pistons travel a master brake cylinder's bore, pressurizing brake fluid and sending it through a network of brake hoses and lines. In drum brakes, the fluid forces brake shoes and brake drums to clamp and rub together. In disc brakes, it causes brake rotors to fasten to and rub brake calipers and brake pads. Friction results, and it's that resistance that your Honda vehicle uses to slow down and stop.

How You Tell if Yours Need Changing

Look for the signs, including:

• Warning lights on the dash

• Less brake grip than normal

Grinding indicates that calipers may be directly contacting rotors because the former's pads have worn out.
